RAMAN EFFECT

While studying natural phenomena light the blue colour of the sky and ocean C.V. Raman discovered a new scattering process .when monochromatic beam of light is passed through a transparent liquid like benzene and toluene it gets scattered with a change in frequency of the incident light scattered spectrum is found to have three different types of spectral lines .Lines having same frequency as that of the incident light called Rayleigh line ;lines having frequency smaller than that of the incident light called  Stokes line and lines having frequency greater than that of the incident light is called Anti - stokes lines. The stokes and Anti - stokes  lines are symmetrically situated with respect to the Rayleigh line and are generally  referred to as Raman lines. The shift in frequency between the Rayleigh  line and any Rama line is designated as Raman shift .This phenomena discovered by Ramen in 1928 is known  as Raman effect for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930
